Dalia Khichdi

A flavorful quick-fix meal, Dalia Khichdi it is!!! To prepare it you’ll need dalia (broken wheat), moong dal dhuli (split & skinned mung beans) and rice with some veggies and spices.

Variation: You can also add brown rice. Take 1/4 cup of dal, white rice, brown rice and dalia.

Ingredients:

  1. Moong Dal Dhuli (Split & Skinned Mung Beans) – 1/3 cup
  2. Roasted Dalia (Broken Wheat) – 1/3 cup
  3. Rice – 1/3 cup
  4. Onion – 1 medium (finely chopped)
  5. Tomatoes – 2 medium (finely chopped)
  6. Green Chilli – 2 (finely chopped)
  7. Ginger – 1 inch (finely chopped)
  8. Peppercorn – 5
  9. Clove – 2
  10. Asafoetida – a pinch
  11. Cumin Seeds – 1 tsp
  12. Coriander Powder – 1 tsp
  13. Red Chilli Powder – 1/2 tsp
  14. Turmeric Powder – 1/3 tsp
  15. Garam Masala Powder – 1/3 tsp
  16. Ghee (clarified butter) – 2 tbsp
  17. Water – 3.5 cups
  18. Salt to taste.

PS: 1 Cup = 250 ML.

How to Make Dalia Khichdi:

  1. Soak dal, rice and dalia for 15 mins. Then rinse it thoroughly and keep aside
  2. Meanwhile heat ghee in a pressure cooker. Add peppercorns and cloves. Saute for a few seconds
  3. Add cumin seeds and asafoetida. Let it splutter
  4. Add onions, ginger and green chilli. Saute till onions are translucent
  5. Add tomatoes, turmeric powder, red chilli powder, coriander powder and garam masala powder. Cook till oil starts to separate
  6. Add rinsed dalia, dal and rice along with the salt and water. Mix well and close the lid. Cook on high flame for 7-8 whistles
  7. Turn off the flame and once the pressure settles down open the lid. Stir a little
  8. Your Dalia Khichdi is ready. Top it with some ghee and serve hot with curd or your favorite pickle.
