Tandoori Paneer Thin Crust Pizza

This recipe popped up in my mind a few days ago and I couldn’t rest until I baked this pizza. Many of you would have noticed that quite a few of my recipes have paneer (Indian cottage cheese) in it, then a pizza is must too, lol!!!

Tandoori Paneer Pizza is quiet easily available in India at many pizza places. The flavour of marinated paneer with pizza sauce and veggies is irresistible. To make tandoori paneer topping we marinade paneer in hung curd with a few spices. I have prepared homemade whole wheat pizza dough for this pizza and used homemade pizza sauce as well.

The dough measurements in this recipe are for two thin crust 12-14 inch pizzas or you can prepare one thick crust pizza out of the entire dough. Baking time will change to make a thick crust pizza, as in it’ll be 20-22 mins; first bake for 10 mins with all the toppings except cheese then sprinkle cheese and bake for another 10-12 mins. So you can use the dough as you desire. I have baked a thin crust pizza and used half of the dough. Remaining half I refrigerated and used it later for a Garden Fresh Pizza, the recipe for which I’ll share soon.

Pizza Sauce I had prepared in advance. You can do the same or use store-bought pizza sauce.

Time: Preparation – 2 hours 15 mins, Baking – 15 mins, Total – 2 hours 30 mins

Servings: Makes a 12-14 inch thin crust pizza (using half of the dough)


  1. For Tandoori Paneer:
    1. Paneer (Indian Cottage Cheese) – 1/3 cup (cut into small cubes)
    2. Hung Curd (Yogurt) – 3 tbsp
    3. Garlic – 1 tsp (grated or paste)
    4. Garam Masala Powder – 1/2 tsp
    5. Kasuri Methi (Dried Fenugreek Leaves) – 1 tsp (powdered preferred)
    6. Red Chilli Powder – 1/4 tsp
    7. Coriander Leaves – 1 tbsp (finely chopped)
    8. Salt – 1/4 tsp or to taste
  2. For Pizza Dough:
    1. Whole Wheat Flour – 2 1/2 cups
    2. Active Dry Yeast – 2 1/4 tsp
    3. Warm Water – 1 cup
    4. Sugar – 2 tsp
    5. Olive Oil – 1 tbsp
    6. Salt – 3/4 tsp or to taste
  3. Onion – 1/2 cup (sliced)
  4. Capsicum – 1/3 cup (sliced)
  5. Tomato – 1/3 cup (seeded and chopped into small cubes)
  6. Pizza Sauce – 3-4 tbsp (recipe here)
  7. Shredded Mozzarella Cheese – 1/2 cup or as desired
  8. Red Chilli Flakes – to sprinkle on the top
  9. Dried Oregano – to sprinkle on the top.

PS: 1 Cup = 250 ML

How to make Tandoori Paneer Pizza:

  1. Pizza Dough:
    1. Take a small bowl. Add yeast, 1/4 cup warm water and 1 tsp sugar. Mix and let sit for 5 mins
    2. In a large mixing bowl. Add 2 1/4 cup flour, salt and 1 tsp sugar. Mix and make a well in the center. Add yeast mixture and olive oil. Start mixing with your hand or a wooden spoon and add 3/4 cup water in portions. Mix until the dough comes together
    3. Now knead dough with your hand or in a stand mixer. While kneading start adding remaining 1/4 cup flour in portions until dough is non sticky. It’ll take around 2-3 mins (you may not need to add the full 1/4 cup so add in portions)
    4. Shape dough into a ball. Place in a lightly greased bowl and then grease it from the top. Cover it with a plastic wrap
    5. Let it rise at room temperature until doubled, around 1 hour (not more than 2 hours)
    6. While it’s rising you can chop your veggies and marinade the paneer
  2. Tandoori Paneer Marniation:
    1. Take a mixing bowl and add all the ingredients – hung curd, garlic, garam masala powder, kasuri methi, red chilli powder, coriander leaves and salt. Mix
    2. Add the paneer cubes. Mix and let it marinate for 30 mins
  3.  Tandoori Paneer Pizza:
    1. Take the dough and punch it down a bit. Place it on a lightly floured surface and shape the dough into a ball
    2. If you’re making a thick crust pizza then use the entire dough, else if you’re making a thin crust pizza then divide the dough into two equal size balls. Wrap one portion in a plastic wrap (or keep it in an air-tight container) and refrigerate it for later use
    3. Preheat the oven to 450 degrees fahrenheit or 235 degree celsius
    4. Take the dough ball on a lightly floured surface and roll it with a rolling-pin till you get the desired crust thickness. Place it on a well-greased pizza pan, pizza stone or baking sheet. Brush the outer 1-inch of the dough with a light coating of olive oil
    5. Spread pizza sauce. Top it with marinated paneer (discard the remaining marinade), onions, tomatoes, capsicum and cheese
    6. Bake until crust is golden brown and cheese is melted, takes around 12-15 mins
    7. Your Tandoori Paneer Pizza is ready. Let rest for about 2-3 mins before slicing
    8. Sprinkle some red chilli flakes or oregano. Enjoy!!!
