Whole Wheat Pita Bread

Pita Bread Pockets are so famous worldwide, stuff them with your favorite filling and relish!!!

Many people think these might be difficult to make, but when I recently tried they came out perfect. Better than the store-bought, for me at least. I have prepared these with whole wheat flour, you can also try them with all-purpose flour. Hope you try this recipe and enjoy these too!!!

Time: Preparation – 1 hour 25 mins, Baking – 5 mins, Total – 1.5 hours

Servings: Makes 5 pita breads

Ingredients:

  1.  Whole Wheat Flour – 2 cups
  2. Dry Active Yeast – 1/2 tbsp
  3. Sugar – 1/2 tsp
  4. Warm Water – 1 cup
  5. Olive Oil – 2 tbsp
  6. Salt to taste.

PS: 1 Cup = 250 ML.

How to make Whole Wheat Pita Bread:

  1. Take a small bowl. Add yeast, 1/8 cup warm water and sugar. Mix and let sit for 5 mins
  2. Take a big mixing bowl. Add flour, olive oil and salt. Mix
  3. Make a well in the centre. Add yeast mixture. Start kneading and add 3/4 cup water in portions. Knead until the dough comes together and it’s smooth. Grease the dough with some oil, cover and let rise for an hour
  4. After an hour punch the dough to release all the air. Let the dough sit for 5 minutes
  5. Pre-heat the oven to 475 degrees fahrenheit or 250 degree celsius
  6. Divide the dough into 5 equal portions. Roll each dough ball into a round flat bread using as few strokes as possible, around 8 inches in diameter and 1/4 inch thick
  7. Place the bread on a lightly greased baking sheet. Bake for 5 minutes or until it puff up like a pillow. Do not over bake them. Your Pita Bread is ready
  8. Cut the bread in halves and fill it with your favorite stuffing!!!
  9. Store them, while they’re still warm in an airtight container
  10. You can reheat the pita bread in oven at 350°F oven or in the microwave.
