Aloo Palak

Aloo Palak is a semi-dry dish prepared with potatoes, spinach, onions, tomatoes and a few spices. It is nutritious and can be relished with phulkas, parathas or dal & rice

Servings: 2-3


  1. Spinach – 100 grams (roughly chopped)
  2. Potato – 2 medium (peeled and chopped)
  3. Onion – 1 small (finely chopped)
  4. Tomato – 1 medium (finely chopped)
  5. Green Chilli – 2 (finely chopped)
  6. Ginger – 1 inch (finely chopped)
  7. Cumin Seeds – 1 tsp
  8. Asafoetida – a large pinch
  9. Coriander Powder – 1 tsp
  10. Garam Masala Powder – 1/2 tsp
  11. Turmeric Powder – 1/4 tsp
  12. Red Chili Powder – 1/4 tsp
  13. Oil – 2 tbsp 
  14. Salt to taste.

How to make Aloo Palak:

  1. Heat oil in a kadai or a pan. Add cumin seeds and asafoetida, let it splutter
  2. Add onions, potatoes, green chillies and ginger. Saute for a min
  3. Add coriander powder, red chilli powder and turmeric powder. Mix well. Cover and cook till potatoes are 90% cooked. Stir occasionally
  4. Add tomatoes. Mix and cook for a min uncovered
  5. Add chopped spinach. Mix well, cover and cook for 4-5 mins or until spinach is cooked
  6. Uncover and cook on high flame until excess water from spinach is absorbed
  7. Turn off the flame and add garam masala powder. Mix well
  8. Your Aloo Palak is ready. Serve hot with phulkas or parathas.
